Air pollution and heart disease – making the connections

When: Thursday March 12th, 7 pm
Where: UBC Robson Square

Presented by the Centre for Health and Environment Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, this panel features some of BC’s leading experts on the health effects of air pollution, moderated by Michael Brauer, one of the leaders of the Border Air Quality Study and an investigator at UBC’s School of Environmental Health.

Other panelists include:

  • Dr. Stephan van Eeden, who first identified the biological mechanism linking air pollution and heart health;
  • Dr. Ryan Allen, who has worked on the landmark MESA-Air project, a landmark study looking at the cardiovascular effects of air pollution in a population of 7000 people in six major US metropolitan areas.
  • Glen Okrainetz, Manager of the Air Quality Section and Acting Director of the Environmental Quality Branch in the BC Ministry of the Environment.
  • Dr. Chris Carlsten, a physician and researcher who has studied the effect of traffic exhaust on cardiovascular function.
